Day 105 – Psalm 50

“But to the wicked God says…” Psalm 50:16a

THE FIRST DEFENDANT

Who were “the first defendant”? A careful reading of Psalm 50:7-13 would suggest that God was addressing “The Ignorant”. They did not seem to understand what God was looking for in worship. They continued their worship of God in seeming ignorance. They had to be corrected directly.

ANOTHER DEFENDANT

God now makes direct reference to another major defendant- “The wicked”.

“But to the wicked God says:
‘What right have you to declare My statutes,
Or take My covenant in your mouth.'”
Psalm 50:16

1. This was a more culpable group

a) They were not ignorant of God’s rightful covenant-requirements.
b) They were, from time to time, making references to God’s statutes.
c) They spoke of God’s covenant with their mouth.

2. The wicked

a) God Himself identified them.
b) He addressed them as “The wicked”.
c) He distinguishes them from:-
i) The genuine worshippers (The remnant)
ii) The ignorant who did not know better.

3. General understanding of “the wicked”

a) They were corrupt (Psalm 14:1, 3).
b) They did abominable things (Psalm 14:1-4).
