Day 91 – Psalm 49

“While he lives he blesses himself…” Psalm 49:18a

BLESSINGS FROM OTHER SOURCES

The word “blessing” is not exclusively used to describe the manifestation of His favour. This word can also be used to describe “blessings” from other sources.

“Though while he lives he blesses himself
(For men will praise you when you do well for yourself),
He shall go to the generation of his fathers;
They shall never see light.”
Psalm 49:18-19

1. Other sources of blessings

a) The wealthy man “blesses himself”.
i) A description of the material benefits that he can acquire through wealth.
ii) The wealthy man thus feels he is greatly blessed… by himself.
b) Men’s praises
i) People tend to take notice of the wealthy rather than the poor.
ii) Words of praise are often offered to the successful and the rich.

2. “He shall go to the generation of his father”

a) This is another way of describing “death”.
b) As his father died so will the wealthy man die- in due time.

3. “They shall never see light”

a) The word “light” refers to spiritual enlightenment.
b) God gives vital spiritual light to all who turn to Him for redemption.
c) To those who are caught up with acquiring wealth spiritual enlightenment would not be given.
d) The wealthy who excludes God in his life would go to their grave without ever seeing light.
