Day 85 – Psalm 49

“For he sees wise men die…” Psalm 49:10

DEATH THE LEVELLER

Death is the furthest thought away for those who boast in their wealth. Nevertheless, death is the ultimate leveller.

“For he sees wise men die;
Likewise the fool, and the senseless person perish,
And leave their wealth to others.”
Psalm 49:10

1. “For he sees”

This is a reference to the psalmist. Much of what he writes in Psalm 49 is a result of his observations about life and death.

2. Death

a) It comes to the wise.
b) The fool.
c) The senseless.

3. “And leave their wealth to others “

a) It is a fact that death terminates all claims to wealth.
b) The dead cannot bring his wealth with him into the next world.
c) He will have to leave his wealth behind.

ALL IS VANITY

King Solomon in all his wisdom struggled to accept the solemn finality of death. He had achieved much in his lifetime and he struggled with the fact that he would have to leave all behind when he dies.

“Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under
the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for wind.
Then I hated all my labour in which I had toiled under the sun,
because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.
And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule
over all my labour in which I toiled…”
Ecclesiastes 2:17-19
