Day 82 – Psalm 49

“Those who trust in their wealth…” Psalm 49:6

THE SUBJECT OF WEALTH

Wealth is one of many subjects dealt with in Wisdom Literature. The Scriptures speak much on this subject. Psalm 49is one of many texts that discusses the subject of wealth.

“Those who trust in their wealth
And boast in the multitude of their riches.”
Psalm 49:6

1. The wealthy mentioned in the Scriptures

The Scriptures specifically mentioned those who were blessed with great wealth.

a) Abraham was described as one blessed with great riches (Genesis 13:2)
b) King Solomon was arguably the richest king who ever lived (Ecclesiastes 2:4-9)

The Scriptures teach plainly that wealth was part of His covenant with Abraham.

“And you shall remember the LORD your God,
for it is He who gives you power to get wealth,
that He may establish His covenant which He swore
to your fathers, as it is this day.”
Deuteronomy 8:18

2. The boast of the wealthy

Unfortunately, wealth can do strange things to people. Two things are highlighted:-

a) “Those who trust in their wealth”
i) There is the subtle hint of no acknowledgment of wealth as from God.
ii) There is trust in self; and this expresses itself in trust in wealth.
This was something that God warned Israel to guard against.

“Then you say in your heart,
‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.'”
Deuteronomy 8:17

b) “And boast in the multitude of their riches”

When people become very wealthy, the danger of boasting becomes a solemn reality!
