“He will choose our inheritance for us…” Psalm 47:4a

THE PROMISE OF AN INHERITANCE

The words “inheritance”, “heritage” and “heirs” are closely related. They form a key concept in Israel’s theology.

“He will choose our inheritance for us,
The excellence of Jacob whom He loves.”
Psalm 47:4

1. “He will choose our inheritance for us”

a) It was God who gave to Abraham a great promise of blessing (Genesis 12:1-3).
b) This promise was then extended to the descendants of Abraham (Genesis 12:7; 13:15).
c) This promise of the land was called “a heritage” (Exodus 6:8).
d) It was truly the Lord who chose Israel’s inheritance.

2. Special reference to the Levites

a) The Lord also provided a special inheritance for the Levites.
b) The sons of Korah would also be included.
c) All the tithes that Israel gave to the Lord were to become the inheritance of the Levites.

“Behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tithes in Israel
as an inheritance in return for the work which they perform,
the work of the tabernacle of meeting.”
Numbers 18:21

3. “The excellence of Jacob whom He loves”

a) The inheritance that God gave may indeed be described as “excellence”.
b) God always gives nothing but the best for His people.
c) The reason for giving in this manner was simply because of His love for His people.
d) The mention of “Jacob” reminds us of the fact that Israel’s inheritance was out of grace.

(It was out of God’s matchless grace that Jacob received anything at all- Cf. Genesis 28)
