Day 53 – Psalm 46

“Therefore we will not fear…” Psalm 46:2a

BATTLING FEARS

Fear is an awesome enemy. It is arguably one of the most deadly of enemies. Fear may take many forms and can cause great emotional turmoil. The sons of Korah had personal experience of fears and they did not always fare so well. (Psalm 44 is evidence of how fears can create havoc to our emotional and spiritual health). As Levites, they had to find a solution to this problem of fear. Psalm 46 is an attempt to deal with the problem of fear.

“God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into
the midst of the sea.”
Psalm 46:1-2

1. Things that can cause great fear to arise

a) Earth movements
i) Earthquakes are in mind here.
ii) An earthquake is always a frightening experience.
b) Mountains are carried into the midst of the sea
i) When an earthquake hits even the mountains are affected badly.
ii) The strength and stability they symbolize will be drastically shaken.

2. Turning to God in times of catastrophe

The wisest thing to do in tough circumstances of life would be to turn to God with humble and contrite hearts.

a) Turning to God as our Refuge.
b) Turning to God for needed strength.
c) Turning to God for help.

Only God Himself can help allay our fears. Only He can grant us full comfort of heart and mind.
