Day 42 – Psalm 45

“You are fairer than the sons of men…” Psalm 45:2a

A DESCRIPTION OF THE KING

What were some of the features that people looked for in a king in ancient days?

“You are fairer than the sons of men;
Grace is poured upon Your lips;
Therefore God has blessed You forever.”
Psalm 45:2

1. “You are fairer than the sons of men”

a) Good looks mattered.
b) But more than admiration of the physical appearance of the King is to be noted.
c) There is a tinge of suggestion of adoration of the King.

2. “Grace is poured upon Your lips”

a) How a King speaks is even more important than his physical appearance.
b) Grace is a beautiful and most desirable hallmark of a great King.
i) It displays His benevolent disposition to His subjects.
ii) It precludes wickedness often associated with despotic kings.
iii) It further suggests that this “grace” has been poured out to the King from a Divine Source.

3. “Therefore God has blessed You forever”

a) Noting the blessing of God was something many subjects observe carefully.
b) If the blessings of God were upon the King, then the kingdom would be blessed indeed.
c) God’s blessings were truly upon the King (in this text).
d) When “grace is poured upon (the) lips” of the King, that would be a great indicator of one who has been greatly blessed by God.
