“But You have severely broken us in the place of jackals…” Psalm 44:19a
ANOTHER PAINFUL STATEMENT
The sons of Korah continued in this aggrieved state of mind and each thought borders on sin.
“But You have severely broken us in the place of jackals,
And covered us with the shadow of death.”
Psalm 44:19
1. “But You have severely broken us”
Several strains of feeling may be detected:-
a) Perplexity
b) Despair
c) Protest
d) Indignation
2. “In the place of jackals”
a) Jackals were among the lowest of creatures in the animal kingdom.
b) They did not command respect.
c) They were despised.
d) This was how the sons of Korah felt as they reviewed Israel’s plight
3. “And covered us with the shadow of death”
a) Death seemed imminent.
b) Death was just a hand-breadth’s away.
ABSOLUTELY DUMBFOUNDED
The sons of Korah did not have any inkling of an idea as to why God had allowed them to suffer such devastation. We are reminded of how Joshua once prayed when Israel was defeated by the small city of Ai! God’s answer came to Joshua soon enough! It was because of Achan’s sin that Israel had been defeated (Joshua 7). If only the sons of Korah had remembered Israel’s history better!
