Day 33 – Psalm 44

“All this has come upon us…” Psalm 44:17

A LITANY OF WOES

The sons of Korah had recited a litany of woes to God in prayer. Israel as a nation and the sons of Korah had undergone much suffering. The sons of Korah continued to insist that God had chastened without good reason.

“All this has come upon us;
But we have not forgotten You,
Nor have we dealt falsely with Your covenant.”
Psalm 44:17

1. “All this has come upon us”

a) Enduring taunts
b) Enduring threats
c) Enduring trials and tribulations

2. Two protests registered

a) “We have not forgotten You”
i) There was strong insistence in this statement.
ii) Why had God dealt so severely with His people even though they had not forgotten Him.
b) “Nor have we dealt falsely with Your covenant”
i) This is an extremely bold claim.
ii) Can anyone actually claim to have fully kept God’s covenant in ancient Israel?

SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS

If only the sons of Korah had looked a little more deeply into the heart of the nation, and indeed into their own hearts, the problem of self-righteousness would have been seen clearly. The problem of self-righteousness is most deadly when it refuses to admit guilt and confess sin! It is a problem that must be dealt with summarily, or it would just become worse with each prayer offered. Self-righteousness is not true righteousness! It is just uncalled-for indignation against God.
