Day 19 – Psalm 44

“Because You favoured them…” Psalm 44:3d

AN IMPORTANT OBSERVATION

The land of Canaan was not easily conquered. It took many years of campaigns led by Joshua before Israel could occupy the promised land. The book of Joshua detailed the arduous battles that had to be fought before Israel could settle in the land. The sons of Korah made an important observation concerning the Lord’s hand as Israel fought to settle in Canaan.

“For they did not gain possession of the land by
their own sword,
Nor did their own arm save them;
But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the
light of Your countenance,
Because You favoured them.”
Psalm 44:3

1. Remembering the battle of Jericho

a) One of the clearest examples of God’s strong hand at work was at the battle of Jericho.
b) The mighty city of Jericho fell because of Divine power (Joshua 6).

2. Remembering the defeat at Ai

a) Ai was a much smaller city when compared with Jericho.
b) Yet Israel suffered a shameful defeat at Ai when God was not honoured by the nation (Joshua 7).
c) Ai was finally conquered when God’s word and name were honoured and the house of Achan was disciplined for transgression (Joshua 8).

3. Remembering God’s involvement

a) It was God’s right hand that counted.
b) It was God’s arm of strength that defeated the enemies of Israel.
c) It was God’s countenance that made all the difference.
d) It was because God had lifted His countenance of favour towards Israel that made all the difference.

Israel would do well to honour the Lord who fought for them (Deuteronomy 3:22).
