“To God my exceeding joy…” Psalm 43:4b

DELIGHTING IN GOD

If we are honest with ourselves, we may have to admit that we cannot easily speak of delighting in God. How does one actually do that? The following text gives us a wonderful insight as to how we may delight in God.

“Then I will go to the altar of God,
To God my exceeding joy;
And on the harp I will praise You,
O God, my God.”
Psalm 43:4

1. “Then”

This word gives us the clue as to how the psalmist found delight in God.

a) He obtained vindication from God in answer to his prayer.
b) He found strength even though he felt “cast off”.
c) He found the enlightenment he sought for in the Word of truth from God.

2. “The altar of God”

a) It was at the holy hill of God he found sanctuary.
b) It was at his favourite place, the Tabernacle, that he re-discovered hope and peace.
c) It was at the very altar of God that he found renewed joy in God!

3. “To God my exceeding joy”

a) And now he could speak of God as his “exceeding joy”.
b) His soul had learned how to delight in God!

4. “Praise… O God, my God”

a) Praise now burst forth from his lips easily.
b) Praise must give its full expression on the harp.
c) The Lord was not a God who was far away! He was a wonderfully personal God at hand.
