A LONG-DRAWN BATTLE

Emotional battles are usually long-drawn ones. Good thoughts can be challenged by bad ones. Uplifting moments can be assailed by depressing thoughts. Thank God for other spiritual weapons in our arsenal!

“The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime,
And in the night His song shall be with me-
A prayer to the God of life.”
Psalm 42:8

1. Dwelling on the Lord’s lovingkindness in the daytime

a) It was wise of the psalmist to switch his thoughts to dwell on the Lord instead of His creation.
b) The focus now was on the lovingkindness of God.
c) Daytime reveals many expressions of God’s lovingkindness.
d) The heart is truly uplifted through dwelling on the Lord and His love.

2. A song in the night

a) Night seasons are often to be even more challenging
b) The setting of the sun can signal fresh emotional assaults.
c) The answer to the problem seems to be in having a song in the night.
d) This is a literal song in the night.
i) It could be a song remembered in happier times (Psalm 42:4).
ii) It could be a new song just composed (The sons of Korah were after all psalmists).

3. A prayer to the God of life

Have you come across times when you do not know how to articulate your prayers? Try singing a song as a prayer to God! Many great hymns were actually prayers composed and directed to God. Thank God for beautiful hymns that can move our souls! These songs in the night are acceptable prayers to God when we mean the words we say.
