“Why are you cast down, O my soul?” Psalm 42:5a

LEARNING HOW TO BE FIRM WITH OURSELVES

Do you think you pamper yourself? Some of us are probably guilty of pampering ourselves. The psalmist realized he had to learn how to be firm with himself.

“Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him
For the help of my countenance.”
Psalm 42:5

1. There is great danger when we pamper ourselves

a) We can end up being soft.
b) We can crumble under pressure.
c) We can become cast down.
d) Our soul can become disquieted.

2. Speaking to our soul firmly

a) The soul is the invisible part of a human being.
b) The soul may feel the following things:-
i) It can feel “cast down”.
ii) It can feel “disquiet”.
c) An excellent way of developing fiber and strength to our soul is to address it firmly.

3. The power of “Hope”

a) There is great power to be found in “hope”.
b) Draw on this hope in God and we can look forward to overcome feelings of despair.
c) Hope will enable us to look forward to be filled with praise and joy once again.
