Day 353 – Psalm 41

“Blessed is he who considers the poor…” Psalm 41:1

SUPERSCRIPTION

“To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.”

We have another simple statement identifying the author as King David. No special instructions were given to the Chief Musician.

CONCERN FOR THE POOR

David was right to be concerned about the poor. There were many who may be called “poor” in the land.

“Blessed is he who considers the poor;
The LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.”
Psalm 41:1

1. “The Poor”

a) This would of course include those who have little or no money.
b) This term would also describe those who are oppressed, the down-trodden.

2. “He who considers the poor”

a) It was the Lord Himself who commanded Israel to remember the poor.
b) Clear instructions were given in the following passages:-
i) Consideration of a poor brother (Deuteronomy 15:7-18).
ii) Great generosity was expected from those who were wealthy.
iii) It was considered an offence to the Lord to harden the heart against the poor.

3. “Time of trouble”

a) Who knows when trouble would come our way?
b) Wealth and success are not always certain or assured.
c) Reversals in life could occur.

4. “The LORD would deliver him”

What a wonderful promise of deliverance! The Lord promised that He would remember those who have shown kindness and consideration to the poor!
