Day 352 – Psalm 40

“You are my help and my deliverer…” Psalm 40:17

DEEP GRATITUDE

How deeply grateful do we feel when we dwell on the tender mercies of the Lord shown to us? David gives us a tremendous example of how we may cultivate our heart’s response to the Lord.

“But I am poor and needy; yet the LORD thinks upon me;
You are my help and my deliverer;
Do not delay, O my God.”
Psalm 40:17

1. How may we develop our sense of gratitude?

a) We must possess a greater sense of consciousness of the fact that we are “poor and needy”.
i) This is not a reference to material wealth.
ii) It is a reference to the wretchedness of our soul because of our sinfulness (Psalm 40:12b).
b) When we realize that God owes us nothing because of our wretchedness.
c) When we realize that God continues to actually “think of us”.
i) Our hearts should be deeply moved.
ii) Our hearts must be touched deeply that God would be so kind and gracious to us.

2. How should we make an appropriate response to the Lord?

a) Let us declare openly that the Lord is our Help.
b) Let us bear witness of the Lord as our Deliverer.
c) Let us declare that we have faith in a great God.

A HUMBLE PLEA

There is no escaping the fact that we are just “human beings” (to the core)! No matter how much knowledge we may acquire, and no matter how much wisdom we may attain, we will still cry out… as David did.

“Do not delay, O my God.”
Psalm 40:17c

The Lord will look upon us with tender mercies and He will not delay!
