Day 347 – Psalm 40

“O LORD, make haste to help me…” Psalm 40:13b

IN A DILEMMA

Modern Man seems to be in more of a hurry than ever before. David struggled deep within his heart even as he prayed. He was surrounded by innumerable evils. If God did not deliver him and soon, he feared that he might just perish. Thus he added an extra phrase in his prayer to God.

“O LORD, make haste to help me.”
Psalm 40:13b

How should we understand this prayer request? Let us ponder the following thoughts.

1. “O LORD”

a) David appeals to God as his LORD.
b) This was the special name that God gave to Moses (Exodus 6:3-4).
c) This name may be invoked in prayer
i) God will hear and respond.
ii) He will respond in the sovereign and profound of His own will

2. “Help me”

a) This is clear enough.
b) This is easily understood.
c) David pleads for Divine help.
i) So that he might not be overcome by his enemies.
ii) So that he might stand forgiven in God’s sight.

3. “Make haste”

a) This expresses sense of desperation David felt.
b) David would have to learn all over again what it means to wait on the Lord.
c) But God will never act “in haste”. His timing will always be perfect!
