Day 324 – Psalm 40

“He also brought me up out of a horrible pit…” Psalm 40:2

REMEMBERING GOD’S DELIVERANCE

God’s mercy must never be taken for granted. David took time to remember the time when he waited on the Lord and how He delivered him.

“He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
Out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock,
And established my steps.”
Psalm 40:2

1. “He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay”

a) It was the Lord who delivered David.
i) No one else would have the power to do this.
ii) No one else would have cared enough to rescue David time and again.
b) Two vivid descriptions:-
i) Out of a horrible pit (like an animal trap).
ii) Out of the miry clay (miry clay made it even more difficult to get out of the pit; clay being soft and sticky would function like a mire).

2. “And set my feet upon rock”

a) God took David out of the miry clay pit.
b) But He did more than that.
c) He set David’s feet upon a rock.
i) Contrast was purposely intended.
ii) Instead of miry clay, there was solid rock under the feet of David now.

3. “And established my steps”

a) God took yet another step.
b) He went on to establish David’s steps.
c) This means that David had experienced a complete deliverance.
