Day 32 – Psalm 4

“Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.” Psalm 4:4

THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A KING

David must have had a hard time struggling with being a good king of Israel. His predecessor king Saul had weakened the kingdom of Israel because of misrule.

1. He had to protect the nascent kingdom from external enemies.

2. He also had to guard his throne from enemies who sniped at him whenever an opportunity presented itself.

3. As king of Israel, David had many other responsibilities.

Three may be highlighted!

a) To ensure political stability.

b) To ensure peace and prosperity.

c) To encourage religious faithfulness to the LORD their covenant God.

STRUGGLING WITH FEELINGS OF ANGER

David’s struggle with feelings of anger (towards his enemies) may be seen in this text.

“Be angry, and do not sin.
Meditate within your heart on your bed,
and be still.”
Psalm 4:4

1. “Be angry”

a) Was it an outright sin to be angry?
b) No! It is possible to be angry and not sin.

2. “Meditate within your heart on your bed”

a) David found “meditation” as a good spiritual discipline against the sin of anger.
b) He found time to meditate.
i) Before he went to bed.
ii) He meditated within his heart (suggesting “depth”).
iii) He meditated till he found “stillness of heart”.
