Day 315 – Psalm 39
“My heart was hot within me…” Psalm 39:3a
TURMOIL WITHIN
Turmoil raged within David as his head and his heart struggled to find a balance. On the one hand, he had determined that he would guard his tongue in the presence of the wicked. On the other hand, sorrow crept in as he held his tongue while he watched the wicked prevailing, because he had kept silent.
“My heart was hot within me;
While I was musing, the fire burned.
Then I spoke with my tongue.”
Psalm 39:3
1. “My heart was hot within me”
a) Firstly, feelings of sorrow were stirred up.
b) That gave way to feelings-
i) Of indignation
ii) Of anger
2. “While I was musing”
a) David must have thought over his original statement about keeping silence.
b) Many questions would have gone through his mind and heart.
3. “The fire burned”
a) The answer was surely not in his original declaration about keeping silent.
b) His heart now burned
i) Against the wicked because of their sinister plots.
ii) Against himself because he had opted to remain silent.
4. “Then I spoke with my tongue”
a) There was a time to keep silent.
b) But there must also be a time to speak.
Surely he cannot but speak against wickedness and fight for the cause of good!
