Day 314 – Psalm 39

“I was mute with silence…” Psalm 39:2a

TWO PARTS

David knew he needed to pray and ask for the Lord’s mercy and help. He also knew that he had to do his part when he had to confront wickedness. The difficulty lay in the fact that it was difficult to have the right balance.

THE BEST OF INTENTIONS

David had the best of intentions when he resolved to guard his ways, especially with reference to the use of the tongue. However, he faced a new problem when he sought to stick to his plan to muzzle his mouth.

“I was mute with silence,
I held my peace even from good;
And my sorrow was stirred up.”
Psalm 39:2

a) Silence was the plan.
b) Total silence was the result.
c) But was this the best course of action?

2. “I held my peace even from good”

a) There were times when David knew he could have spoken up.
b) There were occasions when he felt that he should have spoken up.
c) He could have spoken up for those in need of a defender.
i) For the cause of good.
ii) Against the cause of evil.
d) But instead of speaking, he held his peace (his original intention).

3. “My sorrow was stirred up”

a) David’s conscience must have bothered him.
b) Sorrow welled up within him.
