Day 307 – Psalm 38

“Lord, all my desire is before You…” Psalm 38:9

A SAD PRAYER

The exuberant joy David often expressed in his psalms was noticeably absent in Psalm 38. Nevertheless, he prayed on, pouring out his heart to the Lord.

“Lord, all my desire is before You;
And my sighing is not hidden from You.
My heart pants, my strength fails me;
As for the light of my eyes,
it also has gone from me.”
Psalm 38:9-10

1. “Lord”

a) David continued to acknowledge God as his Lord.
b) He was fully conscious of the omniscience of the Lord.
i) All that David felt was “before the Lord”.
ii) Nothing was hidden from the Lord.

2. Baring of the heart

a) The sighing of the heart.
b) The panting of the heart (to express “thirst” for God).
c) The failing strength.
d) The failing of the light in the eyes.

3. Significance of these statements

a) He appealed to the compassion of the Lord.
i) He knew how compassionate God was.
ii) Surely He would be moved by the sad plight of his heart.
b) He was expressing deep remorse and repentance.

He had suffered terribly because of his sin and his foolishness. Would not the Lord be merciful to him and lift him out of this depression?
