Day 289 – Psalm 37

“Do not fret because of evildoers…” Psalm 37:1a

SUPERSCRIPTION

Psalm 37 has a simple and straightforward statement that identifies David as the author.

THE ESSENCE OF PSALM 37

This psalm may be called “a wisdom psalm”. The thrust of Psalm 37 is more directed to readers than to God directly. It gives very clear and strong words of advice concerning life.

THE PROBLEM OF EVIL IN THE WORLD

Once again this subject is addressed. But unlike other psalms of David where he cries out to God for help, this psalm gives good advice as to how to cope with evil.

“Do not fret because of evildoers,
Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.
For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,
And wither as the green herb.”
Psalm 37:1-2

1. Identification of people who engage in evil activities

a) Evildoers
b) Workers of iniquity

2. Responses to evil people

a) “Do not fret”
i) Refusal to fret
ii) Fretfulness must be fought
b) “Nor be envious”
i) There is nothing to envy.
ii) Evil may appear “attractive” sometimes; but it is still to be resisted.

3. The fate of evil doers

Their end is most certain. They will be destroyed eventually! Their doom is predictable!
