Psalm 36:1 "An oracle within my heart..."

Day 284 – Psalm 36

“An oracle within my heart…” Psalm 36:1

SUPERSCRIPTION

“To the Chief Musician. A psalm of David the servant of the LORD.”

The superscription identifies the author as David. There was an extra notation in this superscription. David was identified as “the servant of the LORD”.

This term “servant” was used by David again and again when he speaks to the Lord in prayer (2 Samuel 7). He may be the king of Israel, but in his own eyes, he is nothing more than a servant of the Lord!

But the term “servant of the LORD” carries with it its own special significance. To be a servant of the Lord is high honour to all who truly know Him!

AN ORACLE

David employed a significant word in the opening words of Psalm 36.

“An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression
of the wicked: There is no fear of God before his eyes.”
Psalm 36:1

1. What is an “oracle”?

a) In the Scriptures this word means a divine revelation given by God to His servants.
b) This was the claim that David made as a servant of the Lord.
c) God had given him a special revelatory word (“oracle”).

2. Subject of the oracle

a) The wicked.
b) The transgressions of the wicked.
c) Insights concerning the wicked will be given in this oracle.
d) The opening thought: “There is no fear of God before his own eyes”.
i) The wicked has little or no regard of God.
ii) He certainly does not revere God in any way.

3. What should one do with an oracle from God?

David did the right thing. He gave it due consideration! His heart dwelt on it!
