Day 273 – Psalm 35

“Without cause…” Psalm 35:7

BEHIND EVERY IMPRECATORY PRAYER

Imprecatory prayers are not easy ones to offer. God, being righteous and holy, will not be anyone’s vengeful Judge. David had to make sure that he had a just cause to plead before the Lord!

JUST CAUSE

The following were the things David brought before the Lord:-

1. These were wicked people who sought his life (Psalm 35:4a).

a) Wickedness is well evidenced.
b) Seeking to kill a person is great evil.

2. They plotted to hurt David (Psalm 35:4b).

a) Plotting always suggests pre-meditation.
b) Plotting to intentionally hurt a person was another expression of evil.

3. They had dug a pit to entrap David without cause (Psalm 35:7d).

a) Pits were dug to trap animals.
b) The idea of “a pit” was used to describe the plots of the wicked.
c) It takes great cunning to dig a pit to trap David.

MORE THAN JUST SINISTER PLANS

There was probably no way David could have gotten himself out of his predicaments except to appeal to the Lord for His help.

1. His enemies were probably too powerful.

2. They were more than he could handle on his own.

3. The pits were probably so devious that he could not have escaped them without Divine help.

David would have to resort to similar wicked activities if he were to be left on his own to fight his enemies. The wisest course of action was to bring all these problems to the Lord’s attention. In His great mercy and justice, the Lord would deliver him.
