“The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart…” Psalm 34:18a
GOD’S COMMITMENT TO THE RIGHTEOUS
The righteous are those who have chosen to fear the Lord and to walk in His ways. The Lord, in response, will stay committed to caring for the righteous.
“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears,
And delivers them out of all their troubles.
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart,
And saves such as have a contrite spirit.”
Psalm 34:17-18
1. “The righteous”
a) This word “righteous” is in italics (NKJV).
b) This simply means that the translators added this word to aid the reading of the text
c) This word is correctly inserted. The reference to the righteous in the immediate context may be found in Psalm 34:15
2. Further definition of “the righteous”
a) They have “a broken heart” (that is “humble”).
b) They have “a contrite spirit”.
