Day 183 – Psalm 24

“He who has clean hands and a pure heart…” Psalm 24:4a

COMING INTO THE PRESENCE OF A HOLY GOD

How may a person come into the presence of a great and holy God? David had these thoughts to offer.

“He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,
Nor sworn deceitfully.”
Psalm 24:4

Four things stood out to David as he pondered the question “Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD?” (Psalm 24:3a).

1. Clean hands

a) Free from corruption

b) Free from blood-guiltiness

2. Pure heart

a) No hypocrisy

b) Complete sincerity

3. Idolatry

a) Owning the Lord as the One true God (Cf. Deuteronomy 6:4-5)

b) Rejection of all idolatrous forms of worship

c) There can be no compromise on this issue.

d) David was aware of the many idolatrous practices that were found in the nations surrounding Israel; some had already compromised themselves by worshipping idols.

4. Swearing deceitfully

a) This would mean taking God’s name in vain (all oaths were to be taken in the name of the Lord).

b) This would also mean deceit.

These four elements were placed on high priority in David’s estimation!
