Day 171 – Psalm 22

“They divide My garments among them” Psalm 22:18

STARTLING PROPHETIC DETAILS

Messianic Psalms are fascinating for many reasons. One of them is the accuracy of the prophetic word. Ponder this detail found in the following text!

“I can count all My bones.
They look and stare at Me.
They divide My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”
Psalm 22:17-18

1. “I can count all My bones”

a) A person who is crucified is stripped of his clothes.
b) Thus he can “count all (His) bones”.

2. “They look and stare at Me”

a) A reference to the enemies (“dogs”, “congregation of the wicked” Psalm 22:16).
b) A reference to the multitudes.
c) A further reference to the soldiers on duty at the crucifixion scene.

3. “They divide My garments among them” (Mark 15:24)

a) This was “common practice”.
b) The squad of soldiers would divide among themselves the pieces of clothing belong to the prisoners.

4. “And for My clothing they cast lots” (Matthew 27:35)

a) One of the ways of dividing clothing was through “casting of lots” (gambling).
b) The rolling of the dice would determine who would get the clothing of the prisoner.

SPECIAL APPLICATION TO JESUS

There were two other people who were crucified with Jesus. But they were prisoners. They were condemned for their criminal activities. They did not have any clothing to speak of that the soldiers would have wanted.

In the case of Jesus, the soldiers felt that His clothing would be valuable enough to gamble for them! An absolutely amazing detail of prophecy was captured in this text!
