VITAL ASPECTS OF PRAYER

What does one pray for on the eve of a battle? The following text offers important insights.

“May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble;
May the name of the God of Jacob defend you.
May He send you help from the sanctuary,
And strengthen you out of Zion.”
Psalm 20:1-2

1. Invoking God’s name

Prayer involves invoking God’s name. Two names of God were particularly employed.

a) The LORD
i) This was God’s Covenantal name introduced to Moses (Exodus 6:2-3).
ii) This name was to be invoked in prayer.
iii) This brings assurance that the LORD would come to the rescue of His covenanted people.
b) The name of the God of Jacob
i) This name recalls how God helped Jacob when he was in dire straits (Genesis 28).
ii) The use of this name of God highlights the plight of the nation. It would take nothing than the help rendered to Jacob to save the nation.

2. Three important petitions

All engaged in war understand the dangers that attend battles. Many things could go wrong. The tide of the battle can change for the worse in any moment. Near victory can end with resounding defeat.

a) Defence from God
b) Help from God
c) Strength from God

Victory is assured only when God hears and answers these prayers!
