Day 147 – Psalm 19

“Cleanse me from secret faults” Psalm 19:12b

WHAT IS MAN?

In Psalm 8, the psalmist David pondered the question of the make-up of man. Why would God take notice of puny man compared to the magnificent universe He created? In Psalm 19, David admits to the fact that man is very inclined to sinful tendencies.

“Who can understand his errors?
Cleanse me from secret faults.
Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless, and I shall be innocent of
great transgression.”
Psalm 19:12-13

These thoughts of David may be understood in the following way:-

1. Man is in danger of a number of things:-

a) Of errors
b) Of secret faults
c) Of presumptuous sins

2. He is in danger of the power of sin

a) The presence of sin was from within the heart.
b) The power of sin was such that it would always seek to dominate the sinner.
c) Sin would always seek to enslave the individual.

3. A humble prayer

a) To be freed from the power of sin.
b) To be blameless.
c) To be innocent before God.
d) To never be guilty of committing “great transgression”.

The word of God must be actively employed in our heart and mind, if we are ever to be freed from the tyranny of sin!
