Day 131 – Psalm 18

“He delivered me from my strong enemy…” Psalm 18:17

THE POWER OF THE ENEMY

The historical context David had in mind when he wrote Psalm 18 was in direct reference to King Saul, his deadly nemesis. The following phrases described how he saw his enemy.

1. King Saul was described as “a strong enemy” (Psalm 18:17a).

2. He and his men hated David (Psalm 18:17b).

3. The military strength of King Saul was “too strong” for David to handle (Psalm 18:17c)

4. Saul had an elite force of 3000 men who did his bidding (Psalm 18:18a).

THE POWER OF THE LORD

David thought about the power that was in God! He drew much comfort and strength from dwelling on the awesome might of the Lord. The following phrases used very strong verbs that help us understand that God would expend great power to come to the rescue of His children.

1. “He sent from above” Psalm 18:16a

2. “He took me” Psalm 18:16b

3. “He delivered me” Psalm 18:17a, 18b

4. “The Lord was my support” Psalm 18:18b

5. “He also brought me out into a broad place” Psalm 18:19a

6. “He delighted in me” Psalm 18:19b

PONDERING OVER THE WORKS OF GOD

The Davidic psalms were written for good reason. Four may be highlighted:-

1. To encourage people to ponder about what God has done for His children.

2. To encourage people to pray to God with greater confidence and trust.

3. To encourage people to practise their trust in God in the toughest of times.

4. To bring about an uplift to the heart.
