"Therefore my heart is glad"

Day 112 – Psalm 16

“Therefore my heart is glad” Psalm 16:9

A HAPPY RELIGION

To some, religion is something to be endured! To David, his faith in God was something that made him very glad!

“Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will rest in hope.”
Psalm 16:9

1. “Therefore”

a) This suggests “logical reason”.
b) David’s faith in God did not preclude the use of the mind and the heart.

2. “My heart is glad, and my glory rejoices”

a) The heart
David had every reason to speak of gladness felt in the heart. The following reasons may be adduced:-
i) He had imputed righteousness (Psalm 16:2).
ii) He had great friends (“saints”) (Psalm 16:3).
iii) The Lord was his spiritual inheritance (Psalm 16:5a).
iv) God gave him deep and profound counsel (Psalm 16:7a).
b) My glory rejoices
What is this “glory”? Let us ponder the following thoughts:-
i) There is a glory that is given to man (Proverbs 20:29).
ii) The glory of man reflects the greater glory of God.
iii) The glory of David would be all that he had attained in life.
iv) David was thus speaking of his whole being rejoicing in the Lord.
c) My flesh will also rest in hope
i) We are but mortal (the concept of being “flesh”).
ii) Flesh will die one day… but there is hope of the afterlife.
