Day 100 – Psalm 14
“Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge…” Psalm 14:4a
ATHEISM IS NOT JUST A SCHOOL OF THOUGHT
David’s brushes with those who rejected faith in God caused him to wince as he thought about their wicked activities.
“Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge,
Who eat up my people as they eat bread,
And do not call on the Lord?
There they are in great fear,
For God is with the generation of the righteous.
You shame the counsel of the poor,
But the Lord is his refuge.”
Psalm 14:4-6
1. Atheism is not based on knowledge
a) David affirms this strongly.
b) The theory behind atheism may indeed be said to be “spiritual ignorance”.
2. The wicked activities of those who reject God
a) They eat up people as they eat bread.
i) This is a reference to their bullying tactics.
ii) They are merciless in their ways.
b) They do not call on the Lord.
i) They have already declared that they do not believe in God.
ii) They reject anything to do with God (e.g. calling on God in prayer).
c) They shame the counsel of the poor.
i) The poor in context would be a reference to those who call on God.
ii) They avow faith in God and turn to Him for refuge.
3. No denying an innate problem
No matter how much the atheists may bluster in their denial of the existence of God, they seem to struggle with their own doubts. Thus many seem to struggle with “great fear”. Was the God they deny not with the generation of the righteous?
