Day 95 – Psalm 13

“Consider and hear me, O LORD my God…” Psalm 13:3a

PERSEVERANCE IN PRAYER

If ever there is a strong lesson David had learned about prayer, it would be that he needed to practise perseverance.

HIS QUESTION: “HOW LONG?”

How should we evaluate these questions? Let us ponder the following thoughts:-

1. What they are not!

a) They are not impertinent questions.
b) They are not spurious questions either.

2. What they are!

a) They express a sincere quest of his heart to find answers.
b) They express a spirit of perseverance.

IN SEARCH OF ANSWERS

The psalmist earnestly desired answers from the Lord. When the answers were not immediately forthcoming, he decided that he would rephrase his prayer.

“Consider and hear me, O LORD my God:
Enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;
Lest my enemy say, ‘I have prevailed against him.’
Lest those who trouble me rejoice when I am moved.”
Psalm 13:3-4

1. “O LORD my God”

a) The name of God is invoked solemnly.
b) The personal relationship between God and the psalmist David is brought to the fore.

2. “Lest…”

a) Concern that the enemy should not gloat in his personal triumph.
b) Concern that the enemy should not rejoice at the expense of David… the servant of God! (David’s deeper concern is that God’s name may be besmirched as a result)!
