“Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways.” Psalm 128:1

GOD’S BLESSINGS ON THE FAMILY

The family is very greatly prized in Israel. Few things bring as much hurt as when the family is devastated by war. The years in exile taught Israel the importance of including God in the blessing of the family.

“Blessed is every one who fears the LORD,
Who walks in His ways.
When you eat the labour of your hands,
You shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.
Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine
In the very heart of your house,
Your children like olive plants
All around your table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
Who fears the LORD.
The LORD bless you out of Zion,
And may you see the good of Jerusalem
All the days of your life.
Yes, may you see your children’s children.
Peace be upon Israel!”
Psalm 128:1-6

1. The one who fears the LORD

a) This was one of the fundamental wisdom-truths highlighted to Israel.
b) Few actually practised this fear of the Lord- to their great loss!
c) The one who fears the Lord is he who walks in His ways.

2. The blessings of the Lord highlighted

a) He will be able to enjoy the fruit of his labour.
b) He will find happiness.
c) Things will go well with him.
d) His wife is compared to a fruitful vine (she contributes to the success of the family).
e) The children grow up well as good olive trees (they are an asset to the family).
f) He will see how God would continue to bless Jerusalem with peace.
g) He will be blessed with long life to see his grand-children.
