“Blessed be the LORD, who has not given us as prey to their teeth.” Psalm 124:6

GRATEFUL WORSHIP

The whole point of making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, the Holy City, was to offer worship to God. A key element in acceptable worship is surely to recognize with deep gratitude the Lord’s help in the adverse circumstances of life.

“Blessed be the LORD,
Who has not given us as prey to their teeth.
Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers;
The snare is broken, and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.”
Psalm 124:6-8

1. “Blessed be the LORD”

a) Blessing the Lord was a standard element in worship.
b) It is acknowledging with deep gratitude God’s help in life.

2. The Deliverance of the Lord recalled

a) Deliverance from predators.
b) Deliverance from “fowlers” (trappers/hunters).
c) These were experts in making snares to trap their prey.
d) Escape was made possible by the Lord again and again.
e) Not only was escape made possible, but the snares of the trappers were also broken.
i) This would bring great disappointment to the hunters.
ii) Snares were often quite ingeniously made.

3. “Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth”

a) The name of the Lord represents the Person of the Lord Himself.
b) His name was given to His people.
c) This represented a special relationship with His people. God would defend His people who are called by His name.
