STRUGGLES IN LIFE

There are many struggles in life. Sometimes the struggles are with enemies. At other times, it is with afflictions. In still other times the struggle is with our own heart. The sin of covetousness is perhaps the hardest of battles to win.

“You are my portion, O LORD;
I have said that I would keep Your words.
I entreated Your favour with my whole heart;
Be merciful to me according to Your word.
I thought about my ways,
And turned my feet to Your testimonies.
I made haste, and did not delay
To keep Your commandments.”
Psalm 119:57-60

1. The struggle between our ways and God’s ways

a) This seems to be the main issue here.
b) The psalmist thought about his ways and recognized that they were not good ones.
c) He decided that he would turn his feet away from self and follow God instead.

2. Making the Lord his portion

a) He decided that he would choose the Lord and His ways.
b) The Lord would be his “portion”.
c) Consistent with this decision he would also keep God’s word.

3. Pleading the mercy of God once again

a) There is recognition of human weakness.
b) The psalmist had not been able to fulfil his aspiration.
c) His feet were turned away from following after the Lord (temporarily).
d) He needed the Lord’s mercies to be extended… for forgiveness (implied).
e) He needed mercies to try again to keep God’s word and to walk in His ways.
f) His return to the Lord was made with haste. There was no procrastination here. This was an expression of genuine repentance and turning back to the Lord (Psalm 119:60).
