Day 279 – Psalm 119:25-32

“My soul clings to the dust; revive me according to Your word.” Psalm 119:25

THE NEED FOR REVIVAL

The need for spiritual revival was recognized humbly by the psalmist. He must have felt a terrible sense of dryness within his soul. Thus he cried out to the Lord to revive him.

“My soul clings to the dust;
Revive me according to Your word.
I have declared my ways, and You answered me;
Teach me Your statutes.
Make me understand the way of Your precepts;
So shall I meditate on Your wonderful works.
My soul melts from heaviness;
Strengthen me according to Your word.”
Psalm 119:25-28

1. Recognising the need to pray for revival

a) When the soul “clings to the dust”
This phrase describes a person who has been brought down very low in life.
b) When the soul melts from heaviness and there is hardly any strength left.

2. Admitting one’s spiritual state honestly before God

a) There must be an honest declaration of our ways before God.
b) There is grateful acknowledgment that God heard and answered.

3. Recognising that revival must come according to God’s word

a) “According to Your word”
This phrase was used in the above text twice.
b) God’s answer to the prayer for revival would be according to His word.
c) God’s answer to the prayer for strength would also be according to His word.

4. A deeper understanding

a) Once again there is a plea to be taught the statutes of God.
b) A humble plea is made to God to grant understanding of His precepts.
c) In appropriate response the psalmist determines to do his part- to meditate on God’s wonderful works. (The reference to “works” includes how God has heard and answered prayer.)
