Day 271 – Psalm 118

“Save now, I pray, O LORD…” Psalm 118:25a

CRIES OF HOSANNA

The psalmist went on to describe a special Messianic event that would take place. He saw the Messiah riding on the foal of a donkey making His way up to Jerusalem.

“Save now, I pray, O LORD;
O LORD, I pray, send now prosperity.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!
We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.”
Psalm 118:25-26

1. “Save now, I pray, O LORD”

a) These very words would be uttered by the crowds to greet Jesus (Matthew 21:9).

b) This was a cry for deliverance, no longer for self, but for the nation.

2. “Send now prosperity”

a) Prosperity for the nation is in view.
b) God’s promise of blessing included the provision of material things.
c) This text must not be interpreted as an endorsement to pray for wealth.
d) In this context “prosperity” has the following ideas:-
i) Deliverance has been experienced.
ii) The enemy has been defeated.
iii) The nation can now look forward to peace and the Lord’s continued blessing.
iv) In this light, the Lord grants “prosperity”.

3. “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD”

a) The Messiah had come in the name of the Lord.
b) He is acknowledged as the Messianic-Deliverer.

4. “We have blessed you from the house of the LORD”

This is a benediction-like statement. As the righteous come to the Temple of the Lord, they are greatly blessed by God.
