Day 263 – Psalm 118

“Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!” Psalm 118:1a

GOODNESS AND MERCY

Psalm 118 is a wonderful poem of praise to God for His goodness. The psalmist was most conscious of an expression of God’s goodness- His mercy.

“Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.
Let Israel now say, ‘His mercy endures forever.’
Let the house of Aaron now say, ‘His mercy endures forever.’
Let those who fear the LORD now say, ‘His mercy endures forever.'”
Psalm 118:1-4

1. Two attributes of God highlighted

a) His goodness.
b) His mercy that endures forever.

2. A call to give thanks to the Lord was issued

Once again we see the three groups of people mentioned in Psalm 115:9-11.

a) Israel (as a nation)
b) The house of Aaron
c) Those who fear the Lord

3. Proclamation: “His mercy endures forever”

What is the significance of this proclamation? The following things may be noted:-

a) As a declaration of faith in God’s goodness and His mercy.
b) As instruction about the Person of God.
c) As an encouragement to all to remember God’s goodness and mercy.
d) As a reminder of God’s display of goodness and mercy to all who love and fear Him.
e) As part of worship- to focus on His goodness and mercy.
f) As a deep expression of God’s goodness and mercy personally experienced.
