Psalm 117:1a "Praise the LORD, all you Gentiles..."

Day 262 – Psalm 117

“Praise the LORD, all you Gentiles…” Psalm 117:1a

AN UNUSUAL PSALM

Psalm 117 is an unusual psalm in at least two ways:-

1. It is the shortest of all the psalms.

2. Gentiles are addressed directly at the commencement of the psalm.

A CALL TO PRAISE GOD

The psalmist was not incorrect to urge people to give thanks and praise to God.

“Praise the LORD, all you Gentiles!
Laud Him, all you peoples!
For His merciful kindness is great toward us,
And the truth of the LORD endures forever.
Praise the LORD!”
Psalm 117:1-2

1. Addressees

a) All Gentiles
b) All peoples (Israel and Gentiles)

2. A strong call to offer Praise to God

a) Strength of the call is seen in the repetition of the call “Praise the LORD”.
b) An additional word of encouragement was given- “Laud Him”.

3. Two Reasons for this Call to praise God were mentioned

a) The greatness of God’s merciful kindness.
Three elements are to be noted:-
i) God’s mercy.
ii) God’s kindness.
iii) The greatness of the above.
b) The truth of the Lord

This may be found in God’s written word given to Israel. It may also be found in the heart of every human being. God has written His word of truth in all hearts. His truth is to be appreciated.
