Day 245 – Psalm 113

“Who is like the LORD our God…” Psalm 113:5a

STANDING IN AWE OF GOD

The heart that has learned how to adore God will also stand in awe of Him. The meditative psalmist shares openly why he adores the Lord.

“Who is like the LORD our God,
Who dwells on high,
Who humbles Himself to behold the things
That are in the heavens and in the earth?”
Psalm 113:5-6

1. “Who is like the LORD”

a) A rhetorical question.
b) A question raised in a hushed tone tinged with great awe and reverence.

2. A fresh appreciation of the Lord

a) He is a most personal God to Israel.
b) The psalmist calls Him “The LORD our God”.
c) This phrase is reminiscent of the way Moses addressed God (Deuteronomy 5:2; 6:4).
d) This great God dwells on high (high above the heavens).

3. “Who humbles Himself to behold the things that are in the heavens and in the earth”

a) When God beholds
i) The things that are in the heavens (the stars, the universe as we know it).
ii) The things that are in the earth.
b) God humbles Himself to behold these things.
i) This expresses the psalmist’s high view of God.
ii) His heart is awed that God would deign to even look at puny human beings.

AWED REVERENCE

This is a rare perspective. The common mistake made is that God is bound to hear us when we cry out to Him. The perspective of the psalmist reveals a heart that has understood the Being of God. How our hearts must be challenged to adopt and cultivate such a heart and attitude towards God. Let us seek to possess such a heart that stands in awe and reverence of the Lord.
