Day 232 – Psalm 110

“You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” Psalm 110:4b

TWO ASPECTS OF THE MESSIAH HIGHLIGHTED

In this Messianic Psalm two aspects of the Messiah are highlighted:

1. The Messiah will be a King (Psalm 110:1-3).

2. The Messiah will also be a priest (Psalm 110:4).

THE SECOND ASPECT

The second aspect is featured in the following text.

“The LORD has sworn and will not relent,
‘You are a priest forever according to the order
of Melchizedek.'”
Psalm 110:4

1. “The LORD has sworn and will not relent”

a) This is to emphasise that the Second Aspect is as important as the First Aspect.
b) The Messiah will play Twin roles.
i) He will be King.
ii) He will also be Priest forever.

2. “According to the order of Melchizedek”

a) Melchizedek was a king and priest in the days of Abraham (Genesis 14:18).
b) He is what we call “a type of Christ”.
c) Jesus would be the “Anti-type” for He will fulfil what Melchizedek prefigured.
d) Hebrews 7-10 offer significant enlightenment on the subject of Christ as the High priest after the order of Melchizedek.

3. Significance of these prophetic glimpses of the Messianic King-Priest

a) They help us understand the nature of the Messianic Kingdom.
b) They help us comprehend the nature of the ministries of the Messiah.
c) They challenge us to understand what it means to be “His people”.
d) They challenge us to seek further and deeper comprehension of the Messiah and His glorious Kingdom!
