Day 222 – Psalm 109

“As he loved cursing, so let it come to him…” Psalm 109:17a

RETRIBUTION

The concept of retribution is both real and grim, especially where wickedness is practiced. The following text bears testimony of this concept as it was understood in the days of David.

“As he loved cursing, so let it come to him;
As he did not delight in blessing, so let it be far from him.
As he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
So let it enter his body like water,
And like oil into his bones.”
Psalm 109:17-18

1. “As he… so let it”

a) This is the basic idea of retribution.
b) Retribution is not injustice.

2. “As he loved cursing”

a) He loves to curse others.
b) So must he be prepared to be cursed in return.

3. “As he did not delight in blessing”

a) He disdains the idea of blessings from God.
b) Then he should not mind it if blessings are withheld.

4. “As he clothed himself”

a) Cursing of people is compared to a garment.
b) Cursing is his natural garb.
c) He must be prepared for the consequences (retribution).
i) Cursing will enter into his bones like water or oil.
ii) Both elements do not naturally belong to the bones.
iii) In like manner, those who delight in cursing may face adverse consequences.
