Day 216 – Psalm 109

“Let him be found guilty…” Psalm 109:7b

FALSE ACCUSATIONS

Even though David was king over Israel, he had detractors. These enemies resorted to making false accusations against him. It would not have been difficult to lay false accusations against a king. The wars that David fought in could be a serious bone of contention.

1. Detractors could accuse him of being blood-thirsty.

2. His enemies could accuse him of wasting state resources.

3. They could accuse him of acquiring wealth through wars.

The smear campaigns against David would have very painful to bear. David, being a man of prayer took these false accusations to God.

“Set a wicked man over him,
And let an accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him be found guilty,
And let his prayer become sin.”
Psalm 109:6-7

1. The wicked judged

a) The wicked had made false accusations against David.
b) What if the wicked had to face accusations from other wicked people?

2. An accuser standing at the right hand

a) This is a reference to a court of law in the ancient days.
b) Accusers would be allowed to lodge complaints against the defendant.
c) The wicked can turn against each other.
d) This was in essence what David prayed for.

3. The verdict

a) May the human court of law find the wicked guilty as charged.
b) The wicked may have believed that he could get away but he is found guilty.
c) What if he appealed to God for justice?

His prayer to God would not be answered for it was “sin!”
