Day 191 – Psalm 107

“He sent His word and healed them…” Psalm 107:20a

GRAVE ILLNESS

What was the distress that brought them so near to death? The following text may shed some light.

“He sent His word and healed them,
And delivered them from their destructions.
Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD
for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!”
Psalm 107:20-21

1. “He sent His word and healed them”

a) The word “healed” would suggest that they were probably gravely ill.
b) Their lives were threatened by the illness that plagued them.
c) They needed a healing touch from God.
d) God graciously sent a word that brought about healing.

2. “And delivered them from their destructions”

a) The word “destructions” would also indicate that illness was not the only problem.
b) There were other things (undeclared) that put them in danger.
c) God delivered them from being destroyed.

3. “Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness”

a) If a person has been delivered from what seems certain death how should he respond?
b) Once again the psalmist urges the most basic of response.
c) He must give thanks to the Lord for His goodness!

4. “And for His wonderful works to the children of men”

a) Imagine God breaking down bronze gates.
b) Imagine God sending healing.
c) But of course we should “give thanks to the LORD for His goodness!”
