Day 170 – Psalm 106

“Many times He delivered them…” Psalm 106:43a

DID GOD TOTALLY ABANDON HIS PEOPLE?

God would have every reason to leave the children of Israel to a fate they had brought about on themselves. But in His everlasting mercy, He did not abandon Israel.

“Many times He delivered them;
But they rebelled in their counsel,
And were brought low for their iniquity.”
Psalm 106:43

1. “Many times He delivered them”

a) God raised up many judges.
b) These were “deliverers” sent by God to help the children of Israel.

2. “But they rebelled in their counsel”

a) Each deliverance should have taught Israel vital lessons.
i) That it was folly to forsake God.
ii) That it was heinous to offer human sacrifice.
iii) That they should return to God in repentance.
iv) That they should pay attention to His laws.
v) That they should walk in His ways.
vi) That they should keep close to the Lord in love and loyalty.
b) But the children of Israel learned none of the lessons above.
i) They continued to seek their own counsel.
ii) They believed in themselves.
iii) They continued to walk in the path of rebellion.
iv) They chose their own human counsel over the laws that Moses had given to the nation.

3. The period of the Judges

This was one of the darkest periods in the history of ancient Israel. A careful reading of the Book of Judges would reveal the fact that God continued to mercifully provide one deliverer after another, despite the fact that the children seemed to slip deeper and deeper into sin.
