Day 166 – Psalm 106

“They served their idols…” Psalm 106:36a

THE INEVITABLE HAPPENED

God had warned the children of Israel on a number of occasions about the danger of consorting with the Gentiles. These words of warning fell on deaf ears! The inevitable happened.

“They served their idols,
Which became a snare to them.
They even sacrificed their sons
And their daughters to demons.”
Psalm 106:36-37

1. “They served their idols”

a) The children of Israel once worshipped a golden calf (Exodus 32).
b) On another occasion they worshipped Baal of Peor (Numbers 25).
c) In Canaan they served “idols”.
i) No names were mentioned.
ii) But they were now worshipping many idols (note the use of the plural noun)
d) This was in direct contradiction to the express commandments of God.
i) Not to worship other gods.
ii) Not to make any graven images for worship (Exodus 20:3-5).

2. “Which became a snare to them”

a) Israel did not comprehend that idolatrous worship could be a snare to them.
b) Thus they of their own volition turned their back on God and embraced idols.

3. “They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters”

a) Imagine a worship system that involved human sacrifice!
b) This was bizarre and unthinkable.
c) This system was deemed “demonic”.
d) The psalmist expressed abhorrence for this religious system that called for human sacrifice.
