“They forgot God their Saviour…” Psalm 106:21a

FORGETTING GOD

Forgetfulness is a problem all of us can understand and identify with. Two aspects of forgetfulness may be highlighted.

1. Unwitting forgetfulness

This is quite a common and widespread problem.

a) General Carelessness
b) Age-related issue (Humorously described as “a senior moment”.)

2. Wilful forgetfulness

This is a serious problem. The following text describes wilful and sinful forgetfulness.

“They forgot God their Saviour,
Who had done great things in Egypt,
Wondrous works in the land of Ham,
Awesome things by the Red Sea.”
Psalm 106:21-22

a) How could anyone forget such a great God and Saviour?
b) Egypt was also called “the land of Ham” (Psalm 105:23).
c) The mighty works of God in Egypt.
i) Called “great things”.
ii) Also described as “wondrous works” (Exodus 7-12).
d) “Awesome things by the Red Sea”
i) Opening of the Red Sea.
ii) Crossing the Sea dry-shod.
iii) The protection of the children of Israel when they crossed the Red Sea.
iv) The destruction of the army of Pharaoh who drowned in the Red Sea.

How could anyone forget these great deeds of God? Forgetfulness, unwitting or wilful, is so wrong! The psalmist recalled this to remind the children of Israel that they had been guilty of forgetting God again and again. This sin-problem had to be addressed!
