Day 153 – Psalm 106

“But sent leanness into their soul.” Psalm 106:15b

LEANNESS OF SOUL

The psalmist made a significant comment on what happens to the soul when it keeps complaining. Even when God hears the complaints and graciously answers, the soul suffers.

“And He gave them their request,
But sent leanness to their soul.”
Psalm 106:15

1. “And He gave them their request”

a) Request
i) The psalmist showed much grace in using this word.
ii) The children of Israel virtually demanded that God gives them meat to eat (Numbers 11).
b)He gave
i) God graciously accedes to their request.
ii) They would have their fill of meat (Numbers 11).

2. “But sent leanness to their soul”

a) The children of Israel did not appreciate the significance of having a soul.
b) They did not ask for anything concerning the health of their soul.
c) Consequently their souls became lean.
d) This state of leanness of soul was sad and deplorable.

THE HEALTH OF THE SOUL

In Psalm 63, we have a beautiful picture of a healthy soul.

“My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness,
And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.”
Psalm 63:5

1. A sharp contrast is seen in this text.

2. The healthy soul is “satisfied as with marrow and fatness”.

3. A healthy soul is also a happy soul that will express itself in giving praise to God with great joy.

This is the opposite of a soul that indulges in complaining all the time.
