Day 136 – Psalm 105

“He spoke, and locusts came…” Psalm 105:34a

THE PLAGUE OF LOCUST

All farmers dread the appearance of swarms of locust. The damage that locust can cause is nothing short of devastating. To have a plague of locust following a hailstorm should have caused Pharaoh to comply with God’s command to let the children of Israel go.

“He spoke, and locusts came,
Young locusts without number,
And ate up all the vegetation in their land,
And devoured the fruit of their ground.”
Psalm 105:34-35

1. The Exodus account

a) God instructed Moses to stretch out his hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts (Exodus 10:12).
b) Moses instantly obeyed the Lord (Exodus 10:13).

2. “He spoke”

a) The psalmist reminds us that God was the One who brought about this sign-miracle.
b) He spoke
i) Such is the power of God.
ii) All He needs to do is to speak a word and the locusts came to do His bidding.

3. “Young locusts without number”

a) There would be adult locusts.
b) There would also be “young locusts”.
c) Between the adult and the young locusts:-
i) They ate up all the vegetation in the land.
ii) That is, that which the hail storm did not destroy. Cf. Exodus 10:15

4. The confession of Pharaoh

He confessed his “sin” against the Lord and against Moses (Exodus 10:16). He and the nation of Egypt had never seen such a plague of locust before (Exodus 10:14-15). If this plague was not lifted, Egypt might well be totally destroyed!
